Hans Jacob Hess with his wife were first imprisoned in 1637. During the imprisonment, his wife was bade bitter, for her husband was stripped and both were put in irons bonds for sixteen weeks. He, never the less patiently bore with a steadfast mind until his deliverance.
His wife was first imprisoned in the Council House and then in Athen back, where through bad treatment and unfit food and drink for 63 weeks, she was seized with consumption and after suffering much misery, died in prison.
The property of Hans Jacob Hess was seized by the authroities who realized from the sale, 4,000 guilders. Nother was restored to the family, a great injustice. How will they be able to account for this before Righteous Judgement seat of Jesus Christ.

--------------------------
In 1637 Jacob Hess, an Anabaptist Zurick Canton minister, an aged man of 53 years, was arrested and imprisioned more than 91 weeks for his faith. That was the first time the Governor sent officers to catch a person. In 1639 Anna, his wife, was imprisioned 63 weeks where she died of brutal treatment. Jacob and Anna Hess's confiscated property brought 4,000 guilders at the Jager Council (Anabaptist Head Hunters.) No guilders were restored to any Hess family who remained. Perhaps Hans Hess (second generation) was the only child of this family who survived the Switzerland persecutions.

3 KEEDYSVILLE - The Maryland State Society of the Sons of the American Revolution will dedicate a memorial to Revolutionary War patriot Jacob Hess at the Hess gravesite in Fairview Cemetery here, Saturday, October 6. The service will begin at 3 p.m.

Principal, speaker will be Judge Wilson K. Barnes, past president of the Maryland State Society, SAR. Other participants will include John W. Hoffman, president of the local Christian Ardinger Chapter, SAR, and Irvin David Hess of Yuma, Arizona, a direct descendant of Jacob Hess.

Jacob Hess was born in 1740 and died in 1815. In 1768, he married Margaret Orndorff, the eldest daughter of Major Christian Orndorff, a prominent Washington County citizen, and later acquired from his father-in-law a tract of land along the Antietam Creek. Hess built a mill and a large stone dwelling house on the land.

His military service began on September 19, 1776, as a private in the Maryland Militia "Flying Camp" under command of Capt. Richard Smith, Lt. Walter White and Lt. Thomas Hays.

The Jacob Hess Mill was one of the landmarks in the early history of Washington County. In
early land records, frequent reference is made to "the road leading to Jacob Hess' Mill." In later years, in the immediate area of the mill, the town of Keedysville was built, part of it on original Jacob Hess land. The old mill was operated for almost two centuries. The last owner was Russell Geeting, still residing in Keedysville, who operated it until 1956 and dismantled it in 1960. The present U. S. Post Office and Keedysville Citizens Bank are located on the mill site.

4 Lavina Hess (Grove) was born in Berkley county Virgina on September 14, 1808. In the month of April 1829 she was united in marriage with Henry Hess of Washington county Maryland. Desiring to place their fortune with the western country they moved to Ohio in the spring of 1828. Here they resided for a period of years north of Dayton and in Eaton, Preble county. In 1840 they decided to cast their lot farther west and came to Illinois in October of 1840. The subject of our sketch was the mother of eight children, five boys and three girls. Two boys and two girls are the only remaining children - Martin (Marcus), a farmer residing northwest of Leaf River and Henry of Early, Sac county Iowa. Mrs. J.B. Marston of Davis Junction and Mary, the daughter that lived with her in this vicinity.

When quite young she became a member of the German Reform church and in 1843 united with M.E. church of which she remained a member until her death. The deceased lived northwest of Lightsville for the last fourteen years. He good fortune was to be free from bodily cares but with the usual fate of a severe struggle at times in the battle of life. Heart disease relieved her of the troubles of this world and now she rests with her God.

Rev. Brown formerly of this place, conducted the funeral service and remains were laid to rest in the Lightsville cemetery.
